Believe it or not, our thoughts actually define who we are. Everything starts in your thought, it defines how you feel and how you behave. Therefore, it is very important to have a positive thinking as negative thinking can be very detrimental to us psychologically.

Most of us will have negative thoughts at some point in time. Perhaps more often than we would like to admit. Negative thinking can be damaging not only to our self-esteem, but can begin a cycle of thought and behavior which negatively impacts our own perception of events in our lives.

Here are some steps you can take to get rid of your negative thoughts:

1. Look at the bright side of life. No matter what problems you are facing now, try to look at the bright side. There are always two sides of a same coin. It is up to you which side you want to focus your attention to. If you focus on the negative side, you will make matter worse. On the other hand, if you focus on the positive side, you are going to find a solution to your problem quickly. So, take a step back and look at the situation at hand objectively, look beyond it and try to find the positive sides of the situation.

2. Conquer and Divide. This is a great technique you can use to break things up and divide the main problem into sub-problems until they are manageable. When you break down a complicated problem into sub-problems, thing can become simple and this will allow you to tackle the problem more easily. Finding a solution to a sub-problem become easier when you break one big problem down.

For example: The holidays are approaching and you need to begin the house-cleaning project. You look around and decide it is just too much; you can’t do it; why bother. Stop! Take a deep breath, admit it that the house need to be tidied up and imagine the positive effects of a tidy home. Consider dividing up the tasks. Enlist the aid of your family to help by assigning each one a specific job. Once you begin the process of imagining the positive images, prioritizing and dividing the tasks, you will feel better and it will be accomplished.

3. Turn negative thoughts into positive reinforcement. This is another great technique to remove negative thoughts. For example, one very powerful technique is to switch your thinking from negative into positive thought. For example, instead of saying “I can’t afford to buy that car”; you can change it into a more positive one like “How do I afford to buy that car?”. See the power? You simply turn it into a question. This can help motivate you into thinking how to get something that you want.

You see, it is actually quite easy to get rid of negative thoughts. Just be aware of what is going on in your mind. If you find negativity gets into your mind, try to turn it into a positive reinforcement. Always use positive statements instead of negative ones. Focus on the bright side of thing.
